Have you found your passion?

If you asked any of my kids to tell you what they’re passionate about, you would get a firehose of information on the Bismark, gardening, and Percy Jackson books.

If you asked an adult friend to tell you about their passion you may get a blank stare.

I’m not sure how we grew out of having personal interests, but I don’t like it. Yes, adulting has laundry and taxes and other dumb things, but there’s still room to pursue your passion.

Not sure you should be pursuing your dream? Read my previous article. Convinced? Let’s keep going.

The first step is identifying your passion. This can be tricky if you’ve been caught up and overwhelmed by the responsibilities of your life. But here are some tips that can help:

What activities make you lose track of time? I write from 7am-9am and 2pm-4pm, and they are the fastest four hours of my day. I’m surprised how quickly time passes every time I write. Does that happen when you play the guitar? Or dance? Or work on model airplanes? Take that as a sign that you’ve found something you love.

Pay attention to what others come to you for advice on or help with.  Are you being asked for your cake recipes on a regular basis?  Do people call on you for advice on gardening? Have you thrown more than three baby showers? These may be indicators that you’re uniquely skilled in those areas.

Experiment with new hobbies or interests and see what you like. Sign up for a ballroom dancing class. Check out the quilting group that meets at your library. It may take a while to find what you’re passionate about, but it’s going to be a fun journey.
