Dreams evolve- are you still sailing the right course?

Let me tell you about the time my husband and I joined a sailing club. We don’t know how to sail and we don’t own a boat. But my husband had always dreamed of sailing and we jumped in. Due to my husband’s work schedule, it was several months before he went on his first sailing trip. Five hours later he walked in the door sunburnt, drenched, and hands fixed in a clenched position from gripping the ropes. He informed me that sailing was exhausting, terrifying, and not even a little bit fun. The worst part was how sad he was that the dream he’d held onto for years turned out to be kind of awful.

As you hustle and work for your dream, make time to reassess regularly. Something that set your soul on fire five years ago may leave you cold now. Before you pay the yearly dues for your sailing club/cooking class/crochet retreat check in with yourself to see if this is still something you love, or if you’re holding on to something you used to love. If you find it’s the latter, it’s okay to pivot.

It can be hard to let go of a dream you’ve held onto for years. But letting go of what no longer merits your time and attention, allows you to pursue the things that bring you actual joy.

As your interests, skills, and knowledge evolve, allow your dreams to do the same. Check in regularly to make sure your path is taking you somewhere you still want to go. Do this, and I promise when you get to the end of your trail, you’ll be exactly where you should be.
